Nearly 100 people were killed and over 750, including 133 Indian nationals, remain missing after a massive flash flood originating in Tibet swept through central Nepal on Wednesday, devastating towns and villages and washing away roads and bridges.

Rescue operations continue as flood risk remains

Nepalese authorities continued rescue and relief operations in the affected areas, while warning that the risk of further flooding remains in the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river areas. A lake formed at a river blockage site has not yet fully drained, prompting authorities to urge people to stay away from the rivers and move to safer areas.

Ice-rock avalanche likely triggered floods

Experts at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development said an ice-rock avalanche from a high-altitude area was a likely trigger for the flash floods. The suspected cause remains unconfirmed as investigations continue.

Nepal's Department of Hydrology and Meteorology had earlier said the flooding was not caused by rainfall in Rasuwa and was investigating whether an event on the Tibetan side triggered the surge.

India sends relief as nationals remain unaccounted for

India has sent 10 tonnes of humanitarian assistance and essential medicines to Nepal aboard an Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft, with another military transport aircraft expected to carry further supplies on Thursday. A C-17 Globemaster is also scheduled to depart for Nepal on August 27.

The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu is coordinating with Nepalese authorities over the rescue and relief of Indian nationals and has issued emergency helplines. The Indian Embassy in China has also issued contacts for Indians stranded near the Tibet-Nepal border.

China deploys rescue personnel

China has deployed 145 officers and soldiers to the affected border area to assist with emergency response operations. President Xi Jinping has ordered authorities to step up search and rescue efforts and evacuate people at risk.

World Bank offers रु25 billion

The World Bank has offered up to रु25 billion in emergency financial assistance to Nepal for rescue, relief and reconstruction. India and China have also offered assistance as Nepal continues its response to one of the country's worst recent flood disasters.
